SAE 52100 is a high-carbon, chromium-alloy bearing steel that has been spheroidized and annealed to improve its machinability before a final heat treatment. In this annealed state, the steel is soft and workable, making it ideal for machining, while retaining the potential for developing superior hardness, wear resistance, and compressive strength when hardened. Its high strength and wear resistance make it suitable for applications like anti-friction bearings, gears, and other highly stressed components.

20MnCr5 grade steel is a case hardening steel used extensively for both carburising and carbonitriding, demonstrating reasonably high hardenability and excellent forgeability. This grade also has excellent weldability, however care should be taken to avoid weld cracking.
